Un Goût 1925

A hundred years ago, on April 28th, 1925, the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes opened in Paris. This landmark event not only introduced the world to a new aesthetic language but also laid the foundation for one of the most transformative move- ments in design history: Art Deco. With its bold fusion of modernist, pure lines, impeccable craftsmanship, and the use of luxurious materials, the Exposition marked a revolution in how art and design were perceived.

To mark the centennial of this historic event, Galerie Maxime Flatry presents its latest exhibition, “Un Goût 1925”, offering a modern and personal lens on the 1925 show. On display are works by figures such as Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, Jean Dunand, André Groult, and Maurice Dufrène—renowned artists whose iconic creations were featured at the Exposition and whose legacy has been championed by the gallery since its inception in 2022.

Beyond showcasing rare and important pieces by these celebrated designers, the exhibition also offers a comprehensive view of the aesthetic language of the 1925 Exposition. “Un Goût 1925” epitomizes the precious materials integral to the design ethos of the time, with furniture in amboyna-veneered and richly carved woods, lacquer, as well as eggshell and shagreen. Additionally, the exhibition highlights one of the most striking features of the 1925 Exposition — only revealed after the images from the era were colorized: the importance of color — bold, deep, and vibrant tones that became intrinsic to the Art Deco style.

Ultimately, “Un Goût 1925” promises to offer an evocative taste of this historic exhibition, presented through the profoundly contemporary point of view of Galerie Maxime Flatry.

For its first participation at the Design Miami.Basel fair, Galerie Maxime Flatry has chosen to honor the timeless legacy of Jean-Michel Frank, widely regarded as the most significant designer of the 20th century and an all-time favorite of the gallery.

Entitled "Furnishing By Unfurnishing," the gallery booth will showcase important and rare pieces by Frank, focusing on his quest for simplicity, whereby he essentialized forms and spaces in the most profound manner.

Join us at Design Miami.Basel from June 10th to 16th, booth G08.

In our upcoming exhibition ‘FROM PAUL TO PAUL’ , we are proud to present the works of the French architect and designer Paul Dupré-Lafon (1900-1971), a figure of the Art Deco period.

Born in 1900 in Marseille, it’s perhaps because of his early experiences facing the immensity of the Mediterranean sea that Dupré-Lafon developed a unique notion of luxury, one defined by vastness. He went on to conceive interiors of spectacular dimensions, setting himself apart from his predecessors in the world of Art Deco.

Paul Dupré-Lafon’s contribution to this artistic movement was indeed revolutionary.
He introduced a wise and angular geometry, a departure from the previous Art Deco figures, melding modernist elegance with his pursuit of comfort.

Most importantly, in an era where Art Deco was characterized by small, jewelry-like furniture, Paul Dupré-Lafon not only boldly challenged the norms of his time with the grandeur of larger furniture pieces. He also elevated luxury to another level, notably collaborating with Hermès for the leathers of his creations; such as the bed also clad in parchment and the night valet in oak with bronze detailings showcased in our exhibition.
